Prepare for ISO 14001:2026

The revision of the international environmental standard ISO 14001 is scheduled for publication in April 2026. The emphasis is expected to be on clarifications and the role of climate change. For organizations that prioritize sustainability, now is the time to look ahead.

Does your organization have ISO 14001 certification or are you planning to obtain it? If so, it is essential to stay informed about the periodic revisions. These are planned and published every few years by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to keep the standard relevant and effective in a changing world. Although the update is less radical than the changes to ISO 9001, there are already some important themes that you can look forward to. The new version is expected to make changes to the points below.

Key expected changes in ISO 14001:2026

  • Integration of climate change: Climate risks may become a formal part of environmental management.
  • New section on change management: More focus on structured change within environmental management systems.
  • Consistent terminology via the ISO High Level Structure (HLS).
  • Clearer and more practical wording: Existing requirements are clarified and made more applicable.
Timeline and transition
Draft version (DIS): start February 2025
Final Draft International Standard (FDIS): has now been published. This means that the standard is now available to ISO members for a final review and editorial comments. With the publication of the FDIS, the revision has entered the final phase. This is the last step before the definitive publication of the new standard.
Publication: April 2026
Transition period: The transition period is typically 2 to 3 years. The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) is expected to develop mandatory documents for the transition of certificates to the new standards, in which the transition period will be defined.
