Malvern Panalytical

Safety is pivotal in scientific measuring solutions

Malvern Panalytical, a global provider of scientific measuring solutions and services, does not save on safety. They consciously invest in assuring that not only their products, but also their manufacturing sites comply with the latest requirements around the world. To achieve just that, they involve DEKRA.

Malvern Panalytical has an extensive background in analyzing the chemical composition and characteristics of a large variety of materials and operates on a global scale with over 2,000 people working in about seventy countries across the globe.

Tell us something about your products

Folkert Homma, Director of Product Safety and Compliance at Malvern Panalytical: “We have two manufacturing sites in the Netherlands. In Eindhoven, we manufacture X-ray tubes, which are then incorporated into the final products, made in Almelo.
In total, we have about ten to fifteen product families, ranging from floor-standing X-ray diffraction and fluorescence systems and laser particle size analyzers to portable X-ray benchtop spectrometers used in research laboratories and in many different industries.”
Folkert: “The core of what our customers do is analyzing a process and refining it. Our customers expect us to help them in achieving that. Any alterations that occur during the production of, for example, their batch of steel, need to be found and fixed. Our products allow our customers to continuously monitor their process, analyze it and take adequate measures to refine it.
Our equipment can be applied in many different markets around the world in, for example, the energy sector, the steel industry, mining, pharmaceuticals and food.”

How important is the software in your products?

“It’s safe to say that our products would be useless without their software. Next to physical devices, we develop the software that is used in our products as well. We offer, among others, highly specialized data collection and analysis software, allowing our customers to maximize the effectiveness of their analyses. And of course these always need to be kept up to date”, Folkert adds.

How does DEKRA help you meet your challenges?

“In trying to serve our customers best, we run into many challenges. That goes without saying for any business operating on an international scale. One of those challenges is making sure that we are safety compliant in everything we do, whether we are talking about products or manufacturing sites.
We do not save on safety and always make an effort to meet the most stringent safety requirements by choosing third-party certification. Our customers expect us to, because they use our products in high-risk and critical environments”, he explains.

What’s important in exporting your products?

Folkert: Since we sell around the globe, we also need to meet North-American and Canadian safety standards. DEKRA offers us this global acceptance by using Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories, such as MET labs, which issues North-American and Canadian certifications to us through DEKRA. DEKRA is therefore our ‘single point of access’, which in the end is efficient for us.
Working with DEKRA usually happens in a smooth and coordinated way; there is an open atmosphere and mutual improvements can be discussed. Safety is in both DEKRA’s as well as Malvern Panalytical’s DNA. It simply is a good fit.”
